Asia bint Muzahim

The daughter of Muzahim, was named as the wife of Pharaoh. It is reported that her father's name was Muzahim. Allah blessed her with the care of His Prophet Moses when he was a child. She believed in him when he grew up and endured harm in maintaining her steadfastness to the faith. Her reward with Allah was great. The Quran tells us about her honorable stance before her faith, defending the Prophet of Allah, Moses, before Pharaoh and comprehending his worth when Pharaoh intended to kill him. She became the primary reason for his salvation from death and for the preservation of his life. After that, Moses grew up and was sent by Allah as a messenger, leading to the destruction of Pharaoh and the deliverance of the people of Israel by his hands.

A Model of Optimism

In the Quran, it is mentioned, Pharaoh’s wife said ˹to him˺, “˹This baby is˺ a source of joy for me and you. Do not kill him. Perhaps he may be useful to us or we may adopt him as a son.” They were unaware ˹of what was to come˺ - Surah Al-Qasas – 9. This was said by Asia. While Pharaoh's family found Moses' cradle on the riverbank and brought it to Pharaoh, the wife of Pharaoh defended the infant and endeared him to Pharaoh's family. Allah softened her heart towards him, making him beloved to her. She saw goodness in him and left him with Pharaoh. Moses became a means of her benefit, saving her from disbelief and leading her to faith, from darkness to light, elevating her status and position in this world and the hereafter.

This magnificent discourse, “This baby is˺ a source of joy for me and you, Do not kill him. Perhaps he may be useful to us or we may adopt him as a son.” had an impact on one of the greatest tyrants known in human history and she protected Moses through her compassion and love.

In Asia's words “This baby is˺ a source of joy for me and you” lies the significance of good omens. She obtained what she hoped for; Allah guided her through it, giving her the highest praise in the eyes of others, as mentioned in Surah At-Tahrim 11. And Allah sets forth an example for the believers: the wife of Pharaoh, who prayed, “My Lord! Build me a house in Paradise near You, deliver me from Pharaoh and his ˹evil˺ doing, and save me from the wrongdoing people.” - Surah Al Tahrim - 11

Asia, the daughter of Muzahim, appeared in the life of Moses in various roles, notably as a mother, caregiver, protector, and believer in the message, disassociating herself from Pharaoh and his deeds. She prayed to Allah to grant her a house in paradise, thus, exemplifying patience and faithfulness.

A Role Model in Patience

Asia endured the costs of faith, suffering harm and torture. Salman al-Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "The wife of Pharaoh was tortured in the sun, but when they turned away from her, the angels shaded her with their wings, and she would see her house in paradise."
A single word saved her from gruesome death and returned her to bliss. What did Asia, the daughter of Muzahim, choose? She chose Allah's pleasure and closeness to Him, saying, “My Lord! Build me a house in Paradise near You” - Surah Al Tahrim: 11 She chose, as scholars say, "the neighbor over the house." She chose her Lord and said, "My Lord, build for me near You a house in Paradise," not "My Lord, build for me a house near You in Paradise." Allah fulfilled her hope and expectation after she endured trials and sacrifices.
Asia, the daughter of Muzahim, believed in Allah, saw the light in her heart, endured Pharaoh's torture, but remained attached to Allah, invoking Him, and He answered her prayer. Allah said, And Allah sets forth an example for the believers: the wife of Pharaoh, who prayed, “My Lord! Build me a house in Paradise near You, deliver me from Pharaoh and his ˹evil˺ doing, and save me from the wrongdoing people.” Surah At-Tahrim: 11.

Asia, the daughter of Muzahim, was a model of steadfastness, faithfulness, and conviction, unaffected by her husband's disbelief and tyranny, as it is one of Allah's decrees in His creation, ˹They state˺ that no soul burdened with sin will bear the burden of another, (Surah An-Najm -38).
