We remain grateful to those who planted the seeds of our union. We are proud of what we have achieved so far, and we will honor our forefathers by continuing to take the country forward into an ever brighter future.
This international recognition of the UAE as a country for the future came thanks to its foresight and planning. This places a greater responsibility on us to develop our capabilities and be a global model to anticipate the future, keep pace with changes and benefit from opportunities. Each year, our country gets bigger and better.
These two remarkable founding fathers of the UAE are the soul of the Union and the architects of the comprehensive economic, urban and social renaissance that extends from east to west and from north to south, and which provides an opportunity for UAE citizens to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle. Here, we shed light on the lives of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, may their souls rest in peace, as we celebrate their enduring legacy and achievements, which we are still benefitting from.
The UAE’s Federation has been a successful example of a union that was based on shared ties that brought together people of the seven Emirates, including history, heritage, and traditions. These connections ensured a strong base for a well-established federation, even though this was a new concept at that time. Through the ‘Founding Fathers’ section, we learnt about the remarkable leaders who planted the seeds of a powerful and steady country. In this section you will learn more about our current Rulers who continued the journey the founding fathers began, and who took an oath to protect this land and maintain the happiness of their people.
(1918 - 2004)
Known as the Father of the Nation for his role in forming the United Arab Emirates, the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was the first President of the UAE. He served this position since the formation of the UAE on 2 December 1971 until he passed away in 2004. He also served as the Ruler of the emirate of Abu Dhabi from 1996 to 2004.
(1908 - 1974)
The late Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi ruled Fujairah from about 1937 to 1974. He believed in a separate identity of Fujairah, which was finally acknowledged by Britain in 1952.
(1918 - 2010)
The late Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi took over as the Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah on 17 July 1948.
On this occasion, and through this section, let’s remember the Union’s Rulers who united their will to plant the seed of a powerful and steady country, in pursuit of the dream of providing the best standard of living to their people. They are the rulers of the seven emirates and the founding fathers of our precious union.
