The UAE’s Federation has been a successful example of a union that was based on shared ties that brought together people of the seven Emirates, including history, heritage, and traditions. These connections ensured a strong base for a well-established federation, even though this was a new concept at that time. The union idea grew in the heart and mind of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may his soul rest in peace. British government suffered from adverse economic conditions, which resulted in the termination of all its protectionist treaties with the Trucial States. This helped to reduce the obstacles and difficulties that had hindered the earlier attempts for unifying the emirates.
Six of the Trucial States’ Rulers including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al Quwain, and Fujairah announced the establishment of a country under the name of the United Arab Emirates.
The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was elected as the first President of the UAE, and the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, was elected as Vice President.
The United Arab Emirates was officially declared as an independent and sovereign state. The Rulers agreed on a provisional constitution for the new country.
Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid wanted to strengthen their Union, so they invited the other five Trucial States to a constitutional conference in Dubai to join the negotiations for the formation of the Union. The Rulers convened in a series of meetings to agree on the main issues. These meetings were done at the level of the Supreme Council of Rulers, and on other levels of authority.
Abu Dhabi Ruler, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and Dubai Ruler, the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, held a meeting at Al Semha to find a more formal and more binding association than what was presented by the Trucial States Council. During that historical meeting, Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid agreed to merge their respective emirates in a union and jointly conduct foreign affairs, defence, security and social services, which was known as The Union Accord
The United Arab Emirates became the 18th member of the Arab League.
The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan formally informed the Secretary General of the United Nations, about the formation of the United Arab Emirates.
The UAE submitted an official request to join the United Nations.
The UN Security Council recommended the UAE join the United Nations as member number 132.
Ras al Khaimah submitted an official request to join the federation of the United Arab Emirates
Ras al Khaimah officially joined the United Arab Emirates federation.
