The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to install solar carports at the Ministry’s building in Dubai. This took place during the Water, Energy, Technology, and Environment Exhibition (WETEX 2017), which is organised by DEWA, at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The solar carports at the Ministry’s building will have a total capacity of 220KW/h.
The MoU was signed by HE Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al-Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, and HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA. Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, the UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation and Dubai Expo 2020 Bureau Director General, was present. "The signing of this agreement is in adherence to the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to continue the sustainable development efforts and make a balance between the economic, social, and environmental development. It also supports the objectives of the UAE Vision 2021 to create a sustainable environment," said Al-Zeyoudi. “As part of its strategic objectives to enhance national efforts and initiatives to mitigate climate change based on anticipating the future and employing innovative technologies, solutions and best practices for dealing with climate change; the Ministry is keen to reduce the UAE’s carbon footprint by taking preventive measures, and developing policies to reduce and adapt to the effects of climate change, which is one of the priorities of the first phase of the UAE Strategy for the Future," added Al-Zeyoudi.
“The MoU with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, is part of the integrated efforts among local and federal organisations to achieve the vision of the wise leadership to continue sustainable development efforts, and balance economic, social and environmental development in the UAE. This supports the UAE Vision 2021 to create a sustainable environment in terms of air quality, reducing the carbon footprint, and increasing reliance on clean energy,” said Al Tayer.
“Shams Dubai initiative, which DEWA launched to connect photovoltaic solar systems in building to DEWA’s grid, supports the Smart Dubai initiative, which was launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make Dubai the smartest and happiest city in the world. It also supports the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 to make Dubai a global hub for clean energy and green economy, and provide 7% of Dubai’s total power output from clean energy by 2020. This target will increase to 25% by 2030 and 75% by 2050,” added Al Tayer.
